ROOTS, ROOTS... Fanou Torracinta and Fabrice Andreani revisit the repertoire of Corsican songs from the 1950s and 1960s: from Charles Rocchi to i fratelli Vincenti, Tony Toga and Antoine Ciosi. With guitar, mandolin and traditional Corsican vocals, they breathe new life into the aesthetic of this musical era by covering and composing new songs. A vibrant tribute to these forgotten artists of ‘the other’ riacquistu, driven by the joy of passing this music on to a new generation. ROOTS, ROOTS… Music, too, stems from childhood. Decisive influences reveal themselves over time, and paths cross, reweaving the broken threads. Thus, Fanou Torracinta and Fabrice Andreani felt the desire to revisit the magnificent repertoire of Charles Rocchi, the Vincenti brothers, Tony Toga and Antoine Ciosi. In the past, the combination of Fanou Torracinta’s gypsy-style guitar and Fabrice Andreani’s traditional vocals might have seemed unlikely. However, although drawn from worlds far removed from their own, this has resulted in interpretations which, through a mysterious alchemy, allow us to rediscover the spirit of what they once were, whilst breathing new life into them, making them seem entirely original. The simplicity of the approach is no small part of this. Indeed, Fanou Torracinta’s acoustic guitar and his virtuoso jazz arrangements take centre stage, leaving Fabrice Andreani the space he needs to showcase the full extent of his artistry. The gradual internalisation of this repertoire has also led to new compositions in the spirit and style of the era in which it was first created. Whilst a sense of nostalgia served as the starting point for this project, the joy of bringing it to fruition was the driving force behind its realisation, along with a desire to celebrate and pay tribute to those who created these songs and who have been largely forgotten in the ‘other’ riacquistu. It is a pleasure to rediscover the beauty of this music and the joyful liveliness of the dances set to the rhythm of guitars and mandolins. Thus, the new generation of artists has found the path to a culture finally at peace with itself.
