The still, impassive observer gazes upon that infinite horizon that cannot be contained. ’ Romanza by Loredana Parrella, first staged in 2011, has been revived since 2020 in a new version for four performers. The production is inspired by the short film Submission by Theo Van Gogh, who was murdered by a fundamentalist in November 2004 in Amsterdam. The raw narrative, fearless and unflinching, evokes faceless, nameless women and men, whose bodies bear the mark of a dehumanising history. Three scenes, ranging from the black of the niqab that conceals the face to the white innocence of child brides, reveal to us the awareness of absence. In this twilight, through a sharp and aggressive choreography—at times circular and hypnotic—the relationship with the other unfolds. Despite years of deprivation, abuse and suffering, the body resists submission and escapes from this darkness. Revealing one’s own face then appears to be the only possible foothold for freedom. An invocation, a confession, somewhere between an act of faith and heart-rending, definitive pain.
