Lecture. THE ORIGINAL SIN OF THE UNITED STATES: The treatment of Native Americans. Wednesday 7 October 2026 at 2.00 pm, Wanda Mastor. ‘The dispossession of the Indians often takes place nowadays in an orderly and, so to speak, entirely legal manner (…) I believe that the Native American race is doomed to perish, and I cannot help but think that by the time Europeans have settled on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, it will have ceased to exist.” In *Democracy in America*, Tocqueville compares the fates of whites, Blacks and Native Americans, concluding as early as then that the fate of the latter is doomed. This lecture traces the gradual disappearance of this original civilisation, through the Indian Wars but also through the instrument of the law. How did the law respond to the original inhabitants of a world whose only ‘novelty’ lay in the fact that it had been discovered and then claimed by the Other? How does it treat them today?
