ICPP Seminar Series – Ludovic LEANDRI: Corsica, an ‘island of violence’? Imaginaries, systems and representations of island violence in cinema. Violence is a recurring, indeed defining, theme in cinematic representations of Corsica. From the late 19th century onwards, adaptations of literary works helped to cement the island’s image as a diegetic space dominated by power struggles, where vendettas, honour and banditry all contribute to the construction of an island imagination rooted in conflict. This theme runs throughout the 20th century and continues into contemporary Corsican cinema, even as a generation of Corsican filmmakers emerges within the film industry and a strong momentum in local production is evident. Whilst this development might have suggested a fresh perspective on Corsica, a large proportion of recent film productions nevertheless continue to draw on various forms of violence. Three themes appear particularly recurrent: the history of Corsica, organised crime, and Corsican nationalism. Between the reproduction of stereotypes, identification and a desire for reappropriation, the central role played by violence in these works raises several aesthetic, cultural and political issues. Analysing how cinema deals with this concept thus enables us to examine the ways in which this medium contributes to the construction, circulation and reconfiguration of contemporary representations of Corsica. Date and time: Tuesday 13 October 2026, 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm, Immersive Room, Edmond Simeoni Building, Mariani Campus, Corti.
