FRAC Corsica exhibition "Atlantropa n'aura pas lieu" - Corti, From 30 April to 17 October 2026. Frac Corsica - Corti. Atlantropa is the name of a vast project conceived in the 1920s by the German architect Hermann Sörgel. He proposed to radically transform the Mediterranean by building giant dams, particularly in the Straits of Gibraltar, to lower the water level. The ambition was immense: to bring new lands to the surface, produce electricity and redesign relations between Europe and Africa over the long term. Presented as a peaceful and rational utopia, Atlantropa was nonetheless based on a profoundly unequal vision of the world, inherited from colonial and industrial thinking. The sea became a surface to be corrected, nature a resource to be disciplined, and technology the tool for reshaping territories guided by a supposedly sovereign human will. The Atlantropa will not take place exhibition seeks neither to analyse this project exhaustively, nor to formulate a frontal critique of it. It takes place elsewhere. It opens up gaps, suggests shifts in the way we look at things, and reveals other ways of thinking about and inhabiting the world. The works in this exhibition sketch out fragmentary narratives, sensitive, sometimes hesitant forms that take their place in the Mediterranean space, seen as an environment traversed by multiple, often dissonant histories. There is no global solution here, no model to follow, but rather a focus on unstable zones, precarious relationships, fragile balances between people, landscapes and the forces that run through them - all ways of echoing the complexity of living things and what resists overly rigid frameworks.
