Don Cherottu and Sancho la Pansa take on a real identity. ‘We’ get to know them and ‘we’ want to know them even better, for they are like comic-strip characters who have come to life. To begin with, they allow themselves to be ensnared by the Duke and his court... but do they not simply wish to hold onto faith in what might be to come? To dream their lives away? Don Cherottu harbours a certain nostalgia for those moments spent reading, for reading is an island that springs up beneath one’s feet, upon which a new world is possible. But when death approaches on tiptoe, will Don Cherottu be afraid? Life is a journey of initiation to which only death can give meaning, and this will be the conclusion to his life of questioning, commitment and struggle.
