Ionesco invites us to a ceremony: King Berenger I is about to die. The cold sets in, the walls crack and the kingdom collapses. The King refuses to accept his end. His court urges him on. Only the young Queen Marie remains loyal to him. The sceptre slips from his grasp, as does his power: death is coming, unpredictable and lonely. First performed in 1962, this play has a strikingly modern resonance today. Aurélie Pitrat has chosen to draw a highly topical thread from it, turning it into a final talkshow. Four women, figures of the new age, accompany this bigamist and outdated King towards his end. In an absurd and grating game, they deconstruct a patriarchal power in free fall. This final ceremony, inspired by contemporary media codes, seals the agony of an ancient world and opens the way to self-mockery, laughter and invention.
