The title of this exhibition echoes the novel À son image by Jérôme Ferrari (2018), in which photography becomes at once a trace, an enigma and an - always fragile - attempt to capture life in its flight. The book's title can be read as a reference to the divine - to the human being fashioned in God's image - as much as to the photographer, a discreet and ambivalent heroine whose gaze moves between war zones abroad and the political and nationalist tensions in Corsica at the end of the twentieth century. By choosing the plural pronoun, À leur image asserts an openness: that of a multiplicity of subjectivities and viewpoints, making it possible to question the current ways in which our territory continues to be seen, travelled through, thought about and experienced. The exhibition brings together artists whose approaches intersect and respond to an essential question: how do we represent an island like Corsica today? Between attachment, distance, social realities, contemporary changes and symbolic legacies, this geography offers an inexhaustible field for exploration. Some people were born there, live there or return, while others have simply spent time there. Their images form a kaleidoscope of perspectives: political, social, cultural and, above all, sensitive. Faced with the hyper-proliferation of digital images, contemporary photography, far from becoming commonplace, is asserting its necessity more than ever. It is more than just a recording: it is first and foremost an experience. It relies on an economy of the visible - waiting, framing, experimenting - that resists the speed of scrolling. In this way, it remains an eminently democratic medium, open to all, but demanding in its ability to convey the depths of reality. Photography has long been seen as an impersonal practice, based on seriality. Yet it is precisely in this tension between repetition and expression that the singularity of the artists featured here lies. Their series affirm their styles, document their inventions, and sometimes underline a departure from their milieu. Through them, an emotional cartography of the island emerges: at once common and fractured, luminous and opaque, familiar and disconcerting. It is in this subtle confrontation with the places, bodies and stories that surround us and make us up that photography rediscovers all its power: that of bringing to light what remains, all too often, off-screen.
