ENJEUX POUR LA PECHE DURABLE EN MILIEU INSULAIRE

From 21 to 24 May 2026: conference: Challenges for sustainable fishing on Mediterranean islands. The conference, entitled "Challenges for sustainable fishing in Mediterranean island environments", is part of the TAATI (Transitions et Autonomies Alimentaires des Territoires Insulaires) research project hosted by the Environment and Society Research Federation. The conference, co-organised by the University of Corsica and the Office de l'Environnement de la Corse, will be held from 21 to 24 May 2026 (2 days in Corte and 2 days in Bonifacio). It will focus on the challenges of sustainable fishing in a Mediterranean island context, using Corsica as an example. It will be structured around conferences, workshops, outings and meetings with fishermen. A wide range of topics will be addressed, including overexploitation throughout the world and in the Mediterranean, industrial fishing, small-scale fishing, the major global databases, the reconstruction of catches, the specific features of fishing on islands, using Corsica as an example, and the value of fisheries monitoring, tools for modelling and assessing stocks, the ecosystem approach, the essential role of marine protected areas in the sustainable management of fisheries resources, the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to fisheries, and the importance of food self-sufficiency. Among the 15 scheduled speakers, several internationally renowned scientists from the University of British Columbia (UBC, Vancouver, Canada) will be present. Among them will be Professor Daniel Pauly, one of the world's leading specialists in fisheries, as guest of honour. Two of his colleagues from Sea Around Us, Deng Palomares and Nicolas Bailly, will also be speaking. Fabrice Teletchea (Université de Lorraine), President of the Société Française d'Ichtyologie, will also be taking part. All the speakers are French-speaking.
