In my youth, the name Danielle Casanova brought to mind an SNCM ferry that linked the town of Bastia, where I was born, to the mainland. A symbol of travel and new horizons. And yet, Danielle Casanova was a Corsican resistance fighter and anti-fascist activist during the Second World War. She lived in France in the 1930s, a time marked by a severe economic crisis, the rise of European nationalism, anti-Semitism, divisions within the left, social unrest and poverty amongst the working classes… Born Vincentella Perini in 1909 in Ajaccio to a family of schoolteachers with republican and secular values, Danielle Casanova distinguished herself from an early age through her character, her keen sense of justice and her political commitment. From her small village of Piana, via Paris, where she fought against the Nazis and their collaborators, to the Birkenau camp where she died of typhus in January 1943, she left behind a rich and eventful life, marked by resistance, solidarity, pioneering feminism and absolute loyalty to her ideals. Alexandre Oppecini.
