Lecture: NAPLES IN THE 18TH CENTURY: A major cultural and political centre in the Mediterranean during the Age of Enlightenment, Wednesday 18 November 2026 at 2.00 pm, Anna Maria Rao. Anna Maria Rao is Professor Emerita of Modern History at the University of Naples Federico II. A leading expert on the Italian Enlightenment, her research focuses in particular on the history of Naples and southern Italy in the Mediterranean in the early 18th century. The Kingdom of Naples, which was further strengthened during the reign of Charles of Bourbon, maintained very close ties with Corsica. The Corsicans exiled after 1739 made their lives in this prestigious capital, a major cultural and political centre in the Mediterranean during the Age of Enlightenment. It was in this context that Pasquale Paoli was taught by Antonio Genovesi.
