Lecture: MYTHS AND FIGURES OF ORAL TRADITION: In the island’s music industry, Wednesday 4 November 2026 at 2.00 pm, Patrizia Gattaceca. Myths are constantly being rewritten; they are reservoirs of questions and answers that echo one another, ceaselessly challenging humanity and the world. Song, just like literature, plays an essential role in the construction and deconstruction of myths. The repertoire of the last fifty years is particularly rich in themes and emblematic figures that resonate with the popular unconscious and its engagement with contemporary issues. Myths, whether of local origin or rooted in Greco-Roman antiquity, intermingle with images of everyday life. The theme of freedom, like the deeds of heroes throughout the ages and from diverse backgrounds, continually fuels musical creativity on the island. These myths and figures become a message that is carried forward by the oral nature of song. They embody values and reflect the concerns of an era. What do the island’s songs tell us over the course of time? Here’s a brief overview…
