Cunferenza: When our stereotypes threaten us! The consequences of social stigmatisation in educational and professional contexts. Wednesday 25 March 2026 at 2pm. BRIGAUD EMMANUELLE. We share a certain number of preconceived ideas or images, often caricatures, concerning the characteristics of a group of people. Referred to as social stereotypes, these beliefs are veritable "cognitive shortcuts" that make our social environment simpler, more understandable and predictable. Nevertheless, research in social psychology has revealed the negative effects of this form of social stigmatisation and, in particular, the threatening effect of the stereotype. In assessment situations, for example, the fear of confirming a negative stereotype about the skills of the group to which we belong can lead us to fail at tasks for which we are nevertheless competent! Widely observed in both educational and professional contexts, this phenomenon helps to entrench social inequalities.
