Cunferenza : From cagole to fraté: what the regionalisms of the Midi and Corsica teach us about language and identity. Wednesday 19 November 2025 at 2.00 pm. MATHIEU AVANZI . In the south of France and in Corsica, the words we use every day - like cagole, fraté, peuchère, tarpin or pinzutu - are not just words. They tell of a way of being, where we come from, and sometimes how we are perceived. Using examples from everyday life, novels, the media and discussions, this talk will look at what these expressions say about our identity, the clichés they convey and their circulation. We will also see how these words, sometimes considered non-standard, find their way into dictionaries and are used in public discourse. Basically, these regionalisms invite us to see the French language differently: as a multiple, living language, deeply rooted in the territories.
